WHAT ARE WE WILLING TO GIVE UP?
It seems logical that Adam Smith, a Scottish philosopher, is considered the Father of Economics. Most know the anecdote of how copper wire was invented; it was when two Scots spotted a penny at the same time.
All I remember of Economics 101 is that the textbook was immense and that it was yellow with brown letters. In order to re-fresh my memory, I went on line and searched for the most important principle of economics. To my surprise there were all kinds of them listed, it began by one from MMPI (financial services), under the title “More from Thought Leadership, The First Principles”, plural thus. I read the entire article and was surprised at the last line which read “Economists should firmly re-align their thinking and provide fresh principles that reflect modern consumer behaviour.” Does this mean that economists actually run (manipulate) the economy? The next sites spoke of the 5 most important principles of economics, then came the 10 economic principles followed by the 3, the 4, the 7, the 6 and the 2.
There were no sets of 8 or 9. So, there are principles galore but strangely enough, not all are necessarily common to the various listings.
One line jumped out at me:
“The cost of something is what you give up to get it”.
At first glance that seemed to make sense, but then I had second thoughts.
This may have been true in the days when we only bought what we could afford and had the money for. But in this day of entitlement, we buy what we want or like, not just necessities. And, whether we can really afford it or not.
Of course, we are aided in that by the business world with promises of no payments until next year, or even longer. Cars are being marketed with cash back or with thousands of dollars in discounts. Buyers beware, but many fall for it just the same and don’t realize that the “cash back” just gets added to the balance. More than 90% of car buyers finance their vehicles and the typical term is now 6 years or even longer. Increasingly more people now lease their vehicles and never get to own them. The discount trick is also practiced by many retailers who first jack up the list price and then advertise sometimes unbelievable discounts, half price, or no sales tax. And they still make a profit. Some things, like for instance mattresses, are always on sale but of course you don’t realize that until you need one and browse the ads. Aren’t we lucky, we need a new mattress and they just happen to be on sale! I often embarrassed Elisabeth because I have always been in the habit of asking for a senior’s discount or, when I offer to pay cash for a major item instead of the never-never plan, ask for a price adjustment. Once at The Brick they refused me, even though they advertised no payments for 2 years or something, which ought to have a cost associated with it. Again, they make a profit on the sale AND the built-in interest so I went elsewhere.
At car dealerships they offer “O” interest for a year or whatever. All of them will give you an automatic price reduction of several thousand dollars, depending on the model, when you pay cash. Quite a few years ago I attended a seminar on negotiating by Herb Cohen, and I have often been successful in reducing the price, or receiving some other advantage to sweeten the deal, using his methods. He was an international negotiator and brokered deals from mergers to hostage taking, he was one of the five most in demand keynote speakers in the U.S. His book “You Can Negotiate Anything” is an excellent read.
THE STOCK MARKET
The Stock Market was a major event and would be held every Tuesday in our town. The stock would arrive in the city on river barges. They would all be driven on the hoof through the city’s downtown traffic to the market square. There were mostly cattle and horses with the odd donkey thrown in (just to represent that minority?) and that about summed up my knowledge of the Stock Market because I had not yet heard of a Bull Market without cattle.

1939 De Veemarkt van Rotterdam (youtube.com)
ÑFor kids it was a favourite event, to be attended as often as possible, sometimes by playing hooky which, incidentally, is of Dutch origin.
“Hoek” (pronounced hook ) means corner. Playing hide and seek one would hide in a “hoek”. The first recorded use of hooky as in skipping school was in the Brooklyn Daily in 1842.
We didn’t call it the stock market because we spoke Dutch and called it a Vee Markt (cattle market). Stock (Dutch stok) to us was a completely different thing because it meant stick or branch. And yet there is a connection. The Old English word stocc (stake/tree trunk) originated from Germanic and evolved to mean live stock (1510), subscribed money of a corporation and in the possession of a trader (1610).
In 1602 the Dutch East India Company issued the first paper shares to fund expeditions and so shareholders were able to buy, sell and trade their stock with other investors.
Six hundred guilder share issued in 1606
When this became common practice, shares were listed, bought and sold at the “Beurs” which means money purse and stems from the Latin bursa. The first Beurs as in stock market was held in Amsterdam in 1610 but Antwerp, the home of the important Van der Beurze family, became the more important trading center. Hence, the early stock markets were called Beurzen.
The small building with the bay window and belltower is the Beurs in Rotterdam. It was completed in 1940 and miraculously escaped the bombardment of that year.
In the seventeen-hundreds, the first North American stock market made its debut in Philadelphia. The New York Stock exchange is now the largest in the world and 6-12 billion shares per day change hands computers there. In slower times investors would decide to buy or not to buy depending on a company’s track record. If it made a good product, offered good service and had good sales they would be considered. Now shares often change owners more than once in minutes from one end of the world to another. There is a lot of speculation and share prices can go up or down at the drop of a hat, regardless of the actual performance of the firm(s) in the real world.
In 1995 the Bre-X corporation announced the discovery of substantial amounts of gold and what had been a “penny” stock now soared to >C$280. It turned out to be a fraud and the house of cards collapsed, leaving many investors broke.
The BC Government formed a holding company BCRIC (colloquially called Brick) of all companies owned by the government. In 1979 British Columbians were given 5 shares in order to promote investment in the province. Additional shares could be purchased, and many did.
Some of the subsidiaries ran into trouble and today the shares are worth zilch. And many investors lost their shirt. I still have my Bearer Shares Certificate to remind me not to trust anybody, least of all the government.
COMMODITIES AND FUTURES
We’ll have to wait and see what commotion the future will bring. The commodity and futures market predates the stock market by some 6,000 years, give or take a few. In Sumer (which is in modern-day Iraq), citizens would use clay tokens sealed in a clay vessel as a medium of exchange for goats. Clay writing tablets indicated the number of clay tokens inside each sealed vessel, and the merchant would deliver the specified number of goats. (Investopedia)
Commodities are tangible items rather than “pieces of paper” and the three main areas of commodities are food, energy, and metals. The most popular food futures are meat, wheat, and sugar. Most energy futures are oil and gasoline. Metals using futures include gold, silver, and copper. (The Balance.com)
Futures are bought and sold at a predetermined price, regardless of what that will be at the time of the actual transaction. Thus, commodities and futures tend to be more volatile than stocks, in part also because their value is affected by the dollar’s value. However, with the present inflation, money will be made. But I don’t have any money that I can afford to lose, so to me, one goat in a jar is worth ten pies in the sky.
A few examples of applied economics by the Canadian Government: The Government will bring in higher taxes for the rich, which will bring them votes but the rich will invest their money elsewhere. The Canadian finance minister is planning to apply tariffs to Chinese E.V.s while the Canadian Government pension plan recently invested $600 million in Chinese E.V.s

The First Principles", meervoud dus.
Zijn boek "You Can Negotiate Anything" is een uitstekend boek.

(The Balance.com)
